Suerte!.

Potential Activities during a placement on the MIDA project

The Coastal and Marine Research centre of University College Cork (http://cmrc.ucc.ie) has a primary objective to make a significant contribution to the scientific understanding of coastal and marine environments and their management. One of the tools it has developed to help in reaching this objective is the Marine Irish Digital Atlas (MIDA). MIDA is both a repository for geospatial data and an informational tool, incorporating text and multimedia elements related to coastal and marine resources in Ireland. The atlas is easily accessible via the Internet, therefore allowing anyone to quickly identify, visualise, and query all datasets relevant to their interests. The atlas displays datasets from numerous coastal and marine organisations within Ireland, thus providing the best single resource for finding and viewing existing Irish coastal and marine datasets. The atlas uses University of Minnesota MapServer for display of the data, while metadata is stored in a PostgreSQL database. Customisation of the atlas interface has been enabled through PHP, JavaScript, and HTML. More information can be found at http://mida.ucc.ie.

Training Tasks

You will be expected to participate in GIS data update of datasets already in the atlas and preparation of the datasets that still need to be included. This will include preparation of metadata, conversion of tabular data to vector data, editing and updating of existing vector and raster data, digitizing of paper datasets and researching sources for new datasets. This data is then uploaded to the Atlas and displayed via the MapServer environment. There is also scope to participate in sourcing and compiling informational materials, which will provide educational information for the general public, for each of the datasets to be included. Click on “information” in the atlas to see the current status of this resource.

Metadata is currently being ported to the GeoNetwork environment. You may also participate in this activity. Incorporation of the metadata information in the GeoNetwork environment is also required.

Familiarity with the concepts of GIS and some experience working in the ESRI-ArcGIS environment is a pre-requisite. Knowledge of web-GIS and Minnesota Map server is a benefit.
